An 8-bore single-barrelled hammer gun by J. Braddell & Son of Belfast; 4” chamber, No. 5070 with Jones’ patent rotary-underlever, action-body with border-scroll engraving, rebounding hammer in backaction lock, the stock with Prince-of Wales grip and steel butt-plate, horn-tipped forend, the clearly damascus barrel engraved 'J. Braddell & Son, Belfast'. Underside of barrel marked: Not For Ball, so dates between 1875 and 1887. Joseph Braddell & Sons, Arthur Square, Belfast, started circa 1838 under Joseph Braddell, trading from 17 Castle Street; taken-on by his son Willaim Henry from 1863 (as J Braddell & Son), at 21 Castle Place, moving in 1915 to Arthur Street/Square – still trading late 1940’s with different management (bought out by shop manager); moved to North Street from 1975, closing after a fire in 2014. Weight 9lb. 12oz., 14in. stock, 38¾in. barrel, approx. ⅜ choke, 4in. chamber, Birmingham Black Powder proof. Action is tight, some old light pitting to bore.
